Ladies - Are you looking forward to your 2008-2009 college year as an exciting adventure? Is this your first year of college..or are you a seasoned college veteran? What a great time to be going to college - learning about new things, meeting new friends, and experiencing one of the greatest times of your life.
As a concerned parent who had both a son and daughter go through college, my suggestion for young ladies as they start the new school year is to check with your college/university to see if they offer RAD Self-Defense training and sign up. The class is about 4-weeks long and 2-3 hours one night a week. You learn about personal safety tactics, common sense awareness and self-defense techniques, and how to defend and protect yourself if attacked or assaulted. The more you know about defending yourself the safer you will be.
If you look back over the past 3 to 5 years there have been many young college-aged women brutally murdered. This makes you realize that young women aren’t as safe at college as one might think. That’s why taking a self-defense class is being proactive with your personal safety and will make you more aware that bad things can and do happen. I wonder how many of these young victims of brutal attacks had taken a self-defense class. The more you know about defending yourself, the quicker you can instinctively react using techniques that may help disable and throw off an attacker so you can get away to safety.
As a secondary backup to your self-defense training, you may also want to carry some type of personal protection device such as pepper spray, mace spray, C2 Taser, stun gun, or a loud personal alarm. (Be sure to get properly trained if you carry one of these devices). If you are an active jogger/walker, or must be out late at night on campus, carrying some type of personal protection device can make you feel safer. (Be sure to check with your campus security department on what the school’s policy is about personal protection devices). These are non-lethal devices meant only to disable an attacker enough for you to get away safely and contact the police.
So check to see if the RAD training is offered and sign up. You may learn some things about yourself that you didn’t know - like you really can do anything you set your mind to. Especially on the last night of training — which is a simulation class where you use the techniques and tactics you’ve learned. Many women express feeling an overwhelming sense of self-empowerment and confidence that they’ve never felt before.
You’ve learned about being vocally assertive when confronted by a potential attacker - using words like ‘BACK OFF" or "STAY BACK." The goal is to let an attacker know you’re not going to be an easy victim of his attack. Sometimes this verbal assertiveness will diffuse the attacker since he may not expect this type of reaction or expect that someone is actually willing to fight back.

Ladies, be proactive with your personal safety and have a GREAT 2008-2009 college year!
Remember, Stay Aware…Stay Alert…Stay Alive!
