When you read information about women who have made self-defense initiatives for women their life’s work, it is inspiring to realize that there are options for women to stay safe (and stay alive) when confronted by an attacker.  When you know how to fight and defend yourself against a predator, you no longer have to live in fear!

Dr. Ruthless (Melissa Soat), self-defense/black belt expert, teaches self-defense and speaks to audiences of women and men about overall self-defense techniques, awareness strategies, and how learning these skills can give you a tremendous sense of empowerment and self-confidence.  I have seen Dr. Ruthless’ self-defense videos and she is one "tough" fighter.  If all options are exhausted and you must fight for your life - fight back with explosive power and find that "ballistic" alter ego inside that refuses to become a victim of some predator’s assault, attack, or worse..murder.  Read more

Your Personal Safety Weapons - Tip of the Week

Are you knowledgeable in martial arts training?  Have you taken any type of self-defense class?  Has your business or company provided you with security and safety awareness training?  Chances are that not many of you have had any self-defense type training.

The following video is our Tip of the Week talking about "Your Personal Safety Weapons."  For someone with no defensive training or education, this video will show you that you already possess personal safety weapons right on your body.  You just need to know how and when to use them.

As always, my recommendation would be to take a self-defense class in your community to learn how to defend and protect yourself in an attack situation.  These classes are usually 4-6 weeks and 1-3 hours a class.  This is a short timeframe when you consider how effective this training could be to you - if you had to use it!

 Remember, Stay Aware…Stay Alert…Stay Alive!

Top (5) Personal Safety Tips On Staying Safe and Alive!

Everyday we get up and go about our daily lives and activities without even giving a second thought to our personal safety.  In reality, we shouldn’t have to because personal safety should be a part of our being.  It should be second nature…a habit that we don’t even have to think about it.  We should instinctively know that our personal safety, as well as those we care about, is a high priority no matter what business we are in, what we do, or where we live - from the safest, small community to the largest, most crime-ridden city.

There’s an old adage that many women think concerning violence and crime and that is, “It won’t happen to me.”  Either they say, I’m too big to be raped,”I’m married and live in a safe areaor “I’m way too old, no one is going to rape me.”  That very thinking usually comes about because it hasn’t happened to them, but they are still at risk and at any given time it could happen to them.  If you go through life without considering the possibility that a sexual assault crime could happen…then what will you do if it does?  You need to be prepared and ready in the event that somebody does try (at some point) to attack you. Self-Defense And Safety Tips To Know - To Stay Alive

x

I’ve talked about "self-defense and safety tips to know" before, but saying it once is not always enough.  Sometimes we must have certain things drilled into our head because we are so busy with life in general - work, kids, work, activities, work, meetings, work, luncheons - that our own personal security and safety becomes less of a concern.  When you feel safe like nothing bad is going to happen to you - complacency begins to creep in.

The moment you totally let your guard down that is when some type of physical attack, assault, robbery, home intrusion, or carjacking may happen to you.  Why me you ask?  Because you must have given the attacker the impression you weren’t aware of what was going on around you or you appeared too complacent.  In any event, the predator/attacker is looking for an easy target - one exactly like I just described to physically attack and take advantage of.

Making security and safety a priority has to become a habit.  Just try it for 30 days and you will see it become a natural part of your daily habit.  If you live in cities considered high risk or listed as one of the top 20 worst crime cities to live in, you definately need self-defense and safety tips to know and stay safe.  Make your security and safety a priority today! Realtor Personal Security & Safety Awareness

Courtesy of Fox6.com

There are many professions that are considered “risky” professions, but none (other than our great soldiers) are as risky as the real estate profession.  There are sales professions that I would also consider risky – such as in-home sales – but the Real Estate Profession over the last 20 years has been marked with sexual assaults, brutal physical attacks, and murders.  Enough so that the National Association of Realtors (NAR) has placed Realtor Safety among its’ top priorities.

Let’s consider the Real Estate Profession:

• The Real Estate Profession is made up of more than 60+% women who for the most part are trusting individuals.
• Real estate professionals are independent business agents and tend to work and meet clients alone.  Many agents occasionally go into an office but primarily work from home.  They come and go without others always knowing their whereabouts.
• Real Estate agents advertise in many venues – billboards, magazines, newspapers, flyers, and corner benches – and usually have their picture and phone numbers out there for everyone to see and know how to contact them.
• Many real estate agents still use “old” glamour shot photos dating back 5-10 years or more on their business cards and advertising material.  Back then these photos were more on the glamorous/sexy side and are probably not the best photos to use today.  Displaying a professional business photo is the type of photo to use – indicating a more professional image.
• Many realtors are very busy and have become complacent about their personal security and safety.  Sometimes without giving a second thought they quickly accept an invitation to meet a prospective client without following the proper safety precautions and guidelines.
• With the real estate market so volitale  – agents are taking prospects who are looking to buy a home without doing the proper background check.  Follow the prescribed real estate safety guidelines before meeting with new clients.  Criminals can be very savvy.  They may consider this criminal activity “their” business and think that real estate agents are an easy target.  While the real estate professional is trusting and thinks the prospect is a potential buyer, he on the other hand may be contemplating his next criminal move. Simulation Night For Our RAD Self-Defense Class

Tonight - Tuesday, 3-25-08 - was the last of our RAD Self-Defense class held at the Elkhart County Sheriff’s Department in Elkhart, Indiana.  (Although I was able to videotape some of the ladies in class, I forgot that we are not able to put the videos on youtube or our website).  The last night is known as "simulation".  This is where you have scenario-type situations set up in which you will be attacked by a perpetrator.  The ladies in this class seemed pretty excited about our last night…maybe even a little apprehensive because we were all unsure of exactly what would happen and how we would respond using the self-defense techniques we learned over the last (3) weeks. Prevent A Crime By Having A Safety Plan In Place - Part II

By Susan Bartelstone, Crime Prevention and Personal Safety Specialist

􀂨Making a Safety Plan.  Perhaps the most important component is #4—coming up with a plan of action quickly. But, how can you be sure you’ll be able to think of response options if you’re terrified? And, in 20 seconds, no less?

The best way to be mentally prepared for a criminal encounter is by having a Safety Plan in place beforehand. Start your own process off by doing the Safety Plan Exercise below:

1. Identify at least five potential safety problems or dangerous situations in your personal life or daily routine that cause you concern.

2. Do some research: collect safety tip pamphlets; read personal safety and self defense books; watch videos. Also study books on defusing confrontations and maybe take a self defense course or three. *

3. Then formulate a plan of action for each of the problems you’ve identified that details everything you could do and say in that instance. The more options you’re familiar with, the quicker you’ll be able to come up with a safe response should something happen.

  4. Write down your Safety Plans on your computer or in a notebook and rehearse them periodically so they become internalized (component #5 of the 20- Second Response). That way your response to any anticipated danger will be automatic and speedy. Read more

* One resource you might want to check out is my upcoming book Think Fast and Prevent a Violent Crime: How to Respond to Danger in 20 Seconds (or Less)! which contains over 60 examples of real-life Safety Plans and success stories, (including three of my own narrow escapes from danger) and more than 100 safety tips. Self-Defense With An Attitude: Don’t Mess With Dr. Ruthless!

x

Dr. Ruthless, Self-Defense/Black Belt Expert

You need to watch this video of self-defense/black belt instructor Dr. Ruthless.  She definitely has an attitude that says, “I will not become a victim of your crime today, Buddy.”  And she looks like she can beat the crap out of guys twice her size.

Melissa Soalt aka Dr. Ruthless has developed self-defense techniques and tactics that when used appropriately will absolutely surprise a male attacker and send HIM running in another direction.  It’s all in how you carry yourself, your mental attitude, your mental toughness, and what you have learned from your self-defense training that will give you the confidence to fight off an attacker.

You need to find your inner strength.  If you have taken a self-defense course or purchased self-defense videos/DVDs, you should practice…practice…practice the techniques you have learned.  After your self-defense class is completed and over, you will want to occasionally visualize in your mind the techniques you learned and how they would apply to specific types of attacks.  It is a good idea to have a basic self-defense training video on-hand, similar to ones listed on my site, that you can refer to from time to time. Self-Defense Awareness, Training, And Being Mentally Prepared

Over the weekend I attended an NRA Refuse To Be A Victim Class in upper Michigan.  This is a program that I am getting certified to train others in - so I wanted to see exactly how the program was structured.  It is primarily designed to provide safety awareness in about 7-8 areas of our daily lives that can keep us safe and ulimately help save our lives.  A big part of the program discussed self-defense and personal security.

Many of the areas that were covered are areas we all know about but because we are so busy with our "everyday life" we tend to become complacent about our personal security and forget.  Safety awareness reminders are good for all of us.  If we learn one good concept from a training program like this, it will definitely be worth the time and investment we put into it.

People say you shouldn’t become paranoid about your personal security and start to question every action by another person.  I totally agree that we should not become paranoid, but that we should develop an acute awareness of what’s going on around us at all times.  Almost like a silent "watchdog" who sees and knows everything.
