Girls & Guns - Women Take Control Of Their Own Self-Defense

Video Courtesy of TrainSafeWI

There’s a growing trend among many women today - they are learning how to fight back and protect themselves against the tremendous increase in violence against them!

Women are taking control of the own destiny by learning self-defense training AND purchasing guns to ensure they don’t become a victim of a violent mugging, physical attack, or worse yet murder.  By taking a quality self-defense class, women can learn strong self-defense techniques and tactics to protect and defend themselves against a violent attacker.

Unfortunately, even if you know self-defense tactics what happens when the attacker is a 250 lb madman? You may need a stronger secondary source of protection to save your life.  Look at the recent murder of Annie Li, the Yale grad student who was murdered by a co-worker.  The person who murdered her was twice her size.

One point to mention - women should make it a habit to always be aware and alert to their surroundings - especially when they are alone.  Also be sure to listen to any "gut instincts" that says there is something "wrong" about a situation that just doesn’t feel quite right.  Your instincts may be telling you that you’re in a dangerous place - so get out of that situation as quickly as you can!

If you are physically assaulted or attacked, chances are likely that no one will be around to help save you - certainly not the police.  Even if you call 911 for help you may get an inept 911 operator who spends more time questioning and talking instead of quickly dispatching the police who may be able to save your life.  We’ve all heard these unfortunate 911 horror stories.

Whatever the situation more women are taking control of their own self-defense and making the decision to protect themselves with a gun.  If you are one of these women, be sure to keep firearm safety in the forefront and take the necessary firearm safety training.  It will help remove some of the fear women may have about carrying a firearm and provide the knowledge needed to operate, handle, clean, and care for the weapon.

After taking the necessary safety training, many women report they join a gun club or association to enhance their skills and to provide a comradere with other women gun owners. Stay safe!

If Your Best Self-Defense Is A Ballpoint Pen - USE IT To Stay Alive!

Stay Aware..Stay Alert..Stay Alive - Surviving Against An Attack!

Women need to be extremely observant and vigilant about their personal safety!  It’s too bad that our society has gone in that direction - but unfortunately it has.  You don’t have to become paranoid about your personal safety -  just make safety a habit.  When you do that you become more observant of your surroundings, your situations, and the people who are in your space.

An article was sent to me by my good friend, Melissa Soalt aka Dr. Ruthless right before our radio interview (Lets Talk Home Security) on Friday, 9-11-09.   It was about a young woman in Chicago who foiled an abduction attempt in the Back of the Yards neighborhood by stabbing her male attacker with a ballpoint pen.  The two men are being sought in the incident authorities said on Friday, 9-11-09.

NOTE:  If physically attacked, use whatever you can to fight off the attacker.  Kick to the groin, yell as loud as you can to try and attract attention, stomp his shins, the top of his foot, use a ballpoint pen - whatever you can that will help save your life!  As Dr. Ruthless says - "Go ballistic on the attacker - he’s probably not going to expect it so when you surprise him like that, he’s probably going to be caught off guard!"

At about 11:30 a.m. on September 3, two suspects were parked in a two-door white panel van near the woman’s home.  The driver stayed in the van while the other guy exited the vehicle and grabbed the 18-year old woman from behind and placed her in a chokehold, authorities said.

Note:  First, be observant if you see two guys sitting in a van especially if they look out-of-place.  If you are grabbed and forced into a vehicle, fight with everything you have because the second location you will be taken to will not be a good thing.  As Dr. Ruthless explains, the second location is always more dangerous!  Criminals have far more control over you at that location.  Go ballistic but do not "go with!"  Many women who have gone with their attackers have not been seen since!!

The man then tried to drag the woman toward the van, but she stabbed him in the neck with a ballpoint pen before getting away authorities said.  Let’s hope they find these criminals and stick it to them.  They need to be off the streets ASAP so other women aren’t in jeopardy of being attacked.  The next victim may not be so lucky!

My recommendation for women is to learn how to protect yourself as part of your overall personal safety.  Take a self-defense class and make it part of your personal protection/safety awareness.  Be in charge of your life’s outcome.  Don’t let some punk off the street decide that today your life ends!!

Dr. Ruthless has a great DVD Self-Defense Program called "Fierce & Female."  This is a program you can use at home at your convenience.  If you are in a high risk job, live a single life, and are female - that just about says it all!  As a female, look at making self-defense training and protection a part of your life.  By learning the self-defense techniques and strategies from Fierce & Female it could help save your life!!

All Joggers & Walkers - Keep Personal Safety A #1 Priority

Are you are an avid jogger or power walker?  If so, make sure your personal safety is a #1 priority as you get ready for your early morning or late evening jog or walk.

As you are getting ready for your jog/walk - strapping on the iPod and earphones – be aware that there may be some "crazies" around your jogging trail looking for someone just like you – happy go lucky and slightly unaware that anything “bad” could happen to you.

When jogging or walking, you may not always hear someone coming up behind you – especially with your headphones on or talking on your cell phone – so make sure you take the volume and distractions into consideration. The majority of attackers come from behind so as you pass someone and he smiles and waves, be aware, peer over your shoulder just to make sure he hasn’t switched gears in your direction and is now behind you.

The number of women joggers/walkers who have been attacked, assaulted, and even murdered over the last five years is staggering.  With proper security and safety awareness, a self-defense mindset, and carrying some type of a personal protection device(s), you can become a woman warrior on the road….to better health and safety!

Here are some personal safety jogging and walking tips that can help keep you safe and alive:

1. Always be alert and aware of your surroundings and the people you are coming into contact with along the walking - jogging path.

2. If you must jog/walk alone, be aware of your surroundings especially when near secluded areas. Try to walk with a partner or take your dog along.

3. Carefully observe male jogger/walkers as you pass them. If you notice anything strange or you have an instinctively bad feeling (gut feeling), remove yourself from that situation right away. Trust your first gut instinct - it’s usually right!

4. Carry some type of personal protection/safety device – like a TASER C2, Mace Pepper Spray “Hot Walkers” walking weights, Pepper Spray, or a Personal Alarm w/lights.

5. If you have headphones on, make sure you can hear noise – like sirens or someone approaching you quickly.  Don’t become so distracted with listening to your MP3, music, or talking on a cell phone that you fail to see signals of an oncoming attack.  You need to stay alert and aware of what’s going on around you.

6. If you must jog/walk at night, do so in well-lit, busy areas and with a partner.  Wear a reflective vest or some attire so you are visible for cars and others to see.

7. If you are wearing a halter top and short shorts – be EXTRA, EXTRA aware of others around you.  We should be able to wear what we want when we want, but the fact is there are idiots out there that prey on women – especially those dressed scantily.  Become knowledgeable of what to do in case of an attack.  A self-defense class teaches techniques to protect and defend yourself enough to get away to safety.  Consider carrying some type of personal protection AND cell phone with you when you jog or walk.

8. Let someone know where you are going and when you expect to return.  If something happens and you don’t return when expected, people know where you had planned to do your jogging/walking.

Keep up your workout program of jogging or walking but be smart and always keep your personal safety first and foremost!

Remember, Stay Aware…Stay Alert…Stay Alive!

Here are (2) personal protection devices you might want to consider as you do your daily jogging or walking:

Safety Tips For Staying Alive in Parking Garages & Mall Lots! (Part 2)

Safety Tips for Staying Alive in Public Parking Garages-Mall Parking Lots

For violent crimes, parking garages and lots are ranked second after crimes committed on residential property. Specifically, in parking garages, dim lighting combined with several parked vehicles make it easy for criminals to hide.

As you are walking to your car in a public parking garage, remember where you parked your car.  Keep the parking level information handy to make it easy to find your car.  As you approach your car be aware of others who may be lingering nearby.  This is a perfect time for a criminal predator to be waiting for an unconscious victim as she walks to her car while looking in her purse for car keys, talking on a cell phone, or juggling packages totally unaware of what is going on around her. Top (5) Personal Safety Tips On Staying Safe and Alive!

Everyday we get up and go about our daily lives and activities without even giving a second thought to our personal safety.  In reality, we shouldn’t have to because personal safety should be a part of our being.  It should be second nature…a habit that we don’t even have to think about it.  We should instinctively know that our personal safety, as well as those we care about, is a high priority no matter what business we are in, what we do, or where we live - from the safest, small community to the largest, most crime-ridden city.

There’s an old adage that many women think concerning violence and crime and that is, “It won’t happen to me.”  Either they say, I’m too big to be raped,”I’m married and live in a safe areaor “I’m way too old, no one is going to rape me.”  That very thinking usually comes about because it hasn’t happened to them, but they are still at risk and at any given time it could happen to them.  If you go through life without considering the possibility that a sexual assault crime could happen…then what will you do if it does?  You need to be prepared and ready in the event that somebody does try (at some point) to attack you. Prevent A Crime By Having A Safety Plan In Place - Part II

By Susan Bartelstone, Crime Prevention and Personal Safety Specialist

􀂨Making a Safety Plan.  Perhaps the most important component is #4—coming up with a plan of action quickly. But, how can you be sure you’ll be able to think of response options if you’re terrified? And, in 20 seconds, no less?

The best way to be mentally prepared for a criminal encounter is by having a Safety Plan in place beforehand. Start your own process off by doing the Safety Plan Exercise below:

1. Identify at least five potential safety problems or dangerous situations in your personal life or daily routine that cause you concern.

2. Do some research: collect safety tip pamphlets; read personal safety and self defense books; watch videos. Also study books on defusing confrontations and maybe take a self defense course or three. *

3. Then formulate a plan of action for each of the problems you’ve identified that details everything you could do and say in that instance. The more options you’re familiar with, the quicker you’ll be able to come up with a safe response should something happen.

  4. Write down your Safety Plans on your computer or in a notebook and rehearse them periodically so they become internalized (component #5 of the 20- Second Response). That way your response to any anticipated danger will be automatic and speedy. Read more

Self-Defense, Women Fighting Back And Trusting Your Instincts!!

This is from an Oprah Show about Women Safety.

Almost 400,000 women are raped every year in American – only about 2 percent of rapists go to jail for their crime.  If you are a woman, you are at risk of rape no matter what your background is but you have the power to take control of your situation!

Oprah says that one of the best things she’s learned about self-defense is, never allow yourself to be taken to a second location.  That is something I also learned in my self-defense class.  Remember that ladies!  It is important to be in control and to use your head in the moment of crisis.  (Remember our  plan of action!). Self-Defense For Realtors-Stay Ahead Of The Predators/Perpetrators

Unfortunately, there are a few sick people out there looking for an easy victim.  What industry makes their job easy?  The real estate industry for one.  For the most part, real estate professionals are independent agents –predominantly women - who work alone and will jump at the opportunity to get a new prospect – especially in these crazy times.

Don’t let the lure of a new prospect or sale make you forget the safety knowledge that you already know.  There were many times when I was an independent security consultant that I would get a call on short notice to meet a stranger (prospect) at a new home construction site or at the person’s home to give a security review.  Mind you – I  met with many single men over the past 20 years and for the most part never felt a concern for my own safety.  However, when I did get that little tug in my stomach that this did not feel right – I listened and either did not go on the appointment or took someone with me.  Be sure to follow your gut feelings or your inner instincts.  They are usually right! Self-Defense Lessons Learned-Don’t Be Lax About Your Personal Safety

By Ken Watterson

The event I am about to describe is a true story. It happened to me. Hopefully my story will raise the awareness of those who read it and save them from making the same kinds of mistakes that I made – mistakes that could have cost me serious injury or possibly my life, at the hands of a street thug who prefers to prey on other people rather than work to make a living on his own.

One evening a couple of years ago, I agreed to meet for dinner at a nice downtown restaurant with a couple of friends from work. We live in a city of a little over 100,000 people in the upper Midwest. Our city has what I would describe as a moderate-to-high crime rate with certain areas of the city much more dangerous than others. Some of the more dangerous areas surround the downtown area and some of the more unsavory characters make their living working the downtown streets.   Read more

Learn To Trust That “Gut-Feeling” – It just might save your life

By Scott Flint

Learn to trust that "Gut-feeling."  It just might save your life.

Think of the many times throughout your life when you experienced a strange feeling that turned out to be an early warning of danger.

Use your early-warning radar:  Did you take heed of that warning and avoid the impending danger, or did you ignore your built-in early warning radar and walk right into harm’s way?

The funny feeling in the pit of your stomach or the feeling of the hairs on the back of your neck standing on end are ways of your body telling you that something is very wrong. Read more
