When I give presentations to groups of ladies on personal safety and security awareness, one of the things I discuss is that your personal security starts at home. That’s why your home should be a safe haven where you feel protected from the criminal elements. Many women are only concerned about their personal security and safety when they are away from home…at the mall, driving in their car, at work, or when out alone in the evening.
Your personal security should be about developing a safety plan and habits of how to stay safe all the time. That means being aware of your surroundings whether you are home or away and alert to any type of situation that appears strange or gives you an uncomfortable feeling like something isn’t quite right. When that happens, that’s your "gut feeling" or your "intuition" possibly giving you danger signals so listen to those signals and get away from that situation as quickly as you can.
Take for instance the lady -young or old - who enjoys jogging or walking in her neighborhood. She gets up every morning and starts her jog or walk first thing. Over the last few months the sun has been up at about 6:00 a.m. - so this would appear be a good time to jog. However, as the time has started to change, it stays darker longer in the mornings and it is getting darker earlier in the evening.
Be especially observant when out jogging or walking late in the evening or taking your dog out late at night for his/her last break. No matter if your neighborhood is considered a fairly safe area, it is still a good idea to be on guard and alert to what’s going on when out by yourself. If you are complacent about your personal security and safety, it’s that one time you let your guard down when you are jogging or walking ...you know chatting on the phone or listening to your MP3 player, that you could miss a danger signal and become a victim of an attack. Spring is definitely in the air and for a lot of people – this is jogging or walking weather. If you are like me, you want to make sure you are getting your exercise – your cardio – so you feel and look better for the coming summer season.
But guess what? The fact that you might think nothing of throwing on your cute little shorts – your halter top – pulling your hair back into a cute little ponytail and strapping your MP3 player to your upper arm and into your ears – means you should definitely be aware of some crazy predator out there looking for someone just like you – happy go lucky, with the CD or MP3 player going on in her ear, and nonchalantly jogging or walking. (The perfect prey).
Before you do your final stretch to hit the road, consider your personal safety along the way. You may be in a truly positive mode as you’re hitting the road – but the sad fact is – crime is rampant in certain areas – and there are predators out there just looking for someone who appears to be totally unaware of what is going on around her. 7 Tips For Staying Safe When Leaving The Mall
Have you noticed how unconscious some people are (especially women - and young women) when they leave the shopping mall or even the grocery store? Well I have. When you think about how easy it would be for some crazy predator who is looking for an easy target - there she is!
Here are some quick safety tips for staying safe when leaving the shopping mall. Pass it on to other women.
7 Tips For Staying Safe When Leaving The Shopping Mall
1. Ladies don’t be talking away on your cell phone not paying attention to what’s around you. If you have your cell phone, ipod or mp3 player hooked to your head, you’re not really paying attention to what’s going on around you. And that really is important, especially if you are going to your car way in the middle of the parking area by yourself. This is exactly the type of person the predator is looking to attack. Be fully aware and totally alert as you walk to your car.
2. Have your keys in your hand and ready as you walk to the car. Be prepared to use your keys as a weapon if you are assaulted or attacked. A great secondary weapon would be to carry pepper spray in your hand slightly concealed. You should definitely know how to use the pepper spray. Don’t wait until the last minute to learn how to use it. The last thing you want to do is spray yourself. Prior practice is highly recommended. Read more
Self-Defense Safety Plan - Do You Have One? You Should.
Check this video out about having a safety plan. It has gone a little to the extreme, but it depicts the reality. If you must rely upon 911 to get the authorities to you….you may spend minutes (which could seem like hours) on the phone just talking to a 911 operator. Time is of the essence….especially when your life is involved. Do you have a Safety Plan of Action in place? If so, you will know what to do to ultimately save your life. If you have a daughter, you will definately want to see this video.

First of all I would make ever effort to have a safety plan of action that involved the use of non-lethal forms of self-defense (ie., C2 Taser, stun gun, pepper spray gun, pepper spray/mace), plus a solid mental safety plan of action.
Some women have had situations in their life that may require them to carry a firearm for protection. Whatever form of personal protection that you carry, be sure you are thoroughly trained in how to use that protection.
Remember, you cannot replace your life. Use whatever form of protection you can to save your life …whether it be self-defense techniques to throw the predator off guard so you can quickly get away to safety or a legal–lethal form of protection, like a firearm. Be sure if you carry a firearm that you have the required legal documents to justify.
You know how our legal eagles love to go after the victims of crime, especially when they turn the tables on the perpetrators.
Remember, Stay Aware…Stay Alert…Stay Alive!
Through A Rapist’s Eyes
This is an article from iKickback.com, but it has surfaced on many emails and blog sites, so I’m not sure who the final credit goes to. It is definitely important information for females of ALL ages.
A group of rapists and date rapists in prison were interviewed on what they look for in a potential victim and here are some interesting facts:
1. The first thing men look for in a potential victim is hairstyle. They are most likely to go after a woman with a ponytail, bun, braid or other hairstyle that can easily be grabbed. They are also likely to go after a woman with long hair. Women with short hair are not common targets.
2. The second thing men look for is clothing. They will look for women whose clothing can be quickly and easily removed. Many said they carried scissors specifically to cut clothing.
3. They also look for women on their cell phone, searching through their purse or doing other activities while walking because they are off guard and can be easily overpowered.
4. Men are most likely to attack and rape in the early morning between 5:00 a.m. and 8:30 a.m. Read more
