Personal Safety Measures You Can Take To Avoid Being A Crime Victim

Video Courtesy of Bakersfield PD

Each day I check the Local section of our newspaper to see what types of criminal "activities" are happening in our community.  It’s nice to know what areas to avoid.  What I see are home burglary/home invasion crimes being committed, robberies and assaults on the streets, business break ins, shootings, stabbings, and more - and this is just in one small city in Northern Indiana.

There are other cities located nearby - large and small - that must have the same type of crime going on. When you read about this type of criminal activity, you have to wonder if people are just unaware that crime is out there?  Are they not being aware of what’s going on around them and at least being alert when potential strangers approach them in either an aggressive or confrontational manner?  Or are they just plain stupid to certain rimes that are consistently happening over and over??

I’m sorry to have to be so blunt but some of these crimes make you wonder if everyone - including the criminals - are on drugs!!  Are we all doing everything we can to proactively ensure our personal safety - at home or wherever we are?

What is your personal protection/safety plan?  How are you going to protect and defend yourself against a criminal attacker?  One suggestion would be to take a self-defense class to learn defensive techniques that can help you disable an attack/attacker enough to get away to safety.  I hightly recommend doing this.

Second, you might consider carrying some type of backup personal protection like pepper spray/mace or bump up the protection a knotch - depending upon activities in your neighborhood - and carry a TASER or stun gun

Once criminals realize people aren’t going to take these kind of attacks or assaults without a fight - maybe they will get the message.  In reality - I DOUBT IT!!  Unsuspecting people are just plain easy targets.  Especially when the common thought of most people is  "crime won’t happen to me!"

Here is a snippet of what was in the Local section of the South Bend Tribune today.  I read it to my husband and he just shook his head as if to say "the world has gone crazy!!"  What has happened to some people?  You know - criminals?  What has caused so many people to devalue another person’s life?  Some of the problems lie in the fact that the economy is tanking, jobs are scarce, and robbing others is really pretty easy!!  DON’T make it easy on the criminal.  Be prepared and carry some type of personal protection.  As I’ve said SOOOOO many times before - take a self-defense training course to learn the fundamentals of how to protect and defend yourself if attacked.

Personal Assault/Attack Crimes On The RiseSOUTH BEND TRIBUNE (03/03/10)

Imagine the list of "daily" crimes in larger cities like Detroit, Houston, Indianapolis, Los Angeles and others. Makes you think of a "war zone" - and with that you need some type of protection to defend yourself!

Again, citizens need to become more aware of what is going on around them and stay alert to strangers approaching them.  When going out at night try to go with others, stay out of areas of your town or community that is crime-ridden especially when alone late at night, and know how to protect yourself.

Self-Defense Is Controlling Your Personal Safety & Protection

When Seconds Count…The Police Are Only Minutes Away

When you read the daily newspaper or watch the nightly news, it seems all you hear about are personal assaults/  attacks, robberies, home burglaries and home invasion robbery crimes.

Crime is running rampant and where are the local police when you really need them??  The police certainly can’t be everywhere plus protect you and your family 24/7!!  What that means is your personal security and the safety of your family is basically your responsibilitySo what do you do??

Devise A Personal Safety Plan That Includes Self-Defense & Safety Awareness Training

First - have a personal safety plan that spells out what to do if you are faced with a threatening or deadly scenario and how you plan to protect yourself and your family.  Have you taken a self-defense class so you know tactics, techniques, and strategies to protect and defend yourself?  That is a recommended first step. Women in general need to have the basic knowledge of how to fight off an attacker if it goes that far.

A self-defense class gives lots of great information from using strong voice inflection, proper ways to carry yourself that depicts confidence, intuitional awareness, and defensive techniques and strategies to use if confronted by a potential attacker.  The ultimate goal of a personal attack is to defend yourself enough to throw off an attacker and escape to safety.

Knowing self-defense tactics can give a person a sense of self-confidence and empowerment, but what if the attacker gets the upper hand?  You may need a secondary level of defense to protect yourself.  That may be personal protection in the form of non-lethal protection, i.e., pepper spray, mace, stun gun, etc. and for others that personal protection may be a lethal firearm weapon.  Every personal attack or assault will be different but one thing is for sure - the criminal committing the crime is most likely using some kind of lethal weapon meant to hurt or kill his victim.

C2 TASER - Non-Lethal Personal Protection To Stun An Attacker Enough To Get Away To Safety

One of my favorite personal protection devices is the TASER C2.  This small personal protection device can easily fit into a purse or pocket and should only be used if you are threatened by a criminal attacker.  TASERs are not legal in every state so check your state’s legality before purchasing.  The TASER has a pretty good record for dropping the "bad" guy quickly if attacked.  Checkout this video to see the effectiveness of the C2 TASER.  This may be one personal protection device that fits into your safety plan.

Add The C2 TASER Into Your Personal Safety Protection Plan

The new TASER C2 series has almost 100% effectiveness rating. It combines the injury reducing benefits of traditional stun technology with a quantum leap in stopping power via new Electro-Muscular Disruption (EMD) technology. In police studies, the new TASER C2 has a higher instant incapacitation rate than a 9mm hand gun. The TASER C2 shoots out 2 darts attached to 15 feet of wire. 50,000 volts travels over the wires and over-rides the central nervous system providing incredible takedown power.

Avoid Being A Crime Victim-7 Personal Awareness Safety Tips!

Video Courtesy of Bakersfield PD

We all seem to live such a fast-paced life.  We are constantly on the run - from work to the gym, taking the kids to school functions, sporting events, going to after work functions, and the list goes on and on.  Being so busy and distracted we can sometimes forget "little" things that are simple, common-sense safety awareness guidelines.  We know them, we know what we should be doing, but because we’re preoccupied we forget.  It’s that one time you forget that could cause you to end up being a victim of a criminal assault or attack.

Here are seven (7) safety tips to consider when you are out by yourself or even if you are with someone.  With the number of personal robberies and assaults happening in  communities across the USA, we need to be armed with the knowledge and ability to protect ourselves wherever we are!

7 Personal Awareness Safety Tips To Remember Wherever You Are!

1.  Be fully aware of your surroundings and totally alert as you walk to your car.  Avoid being complacent and not paying attention when walking alone. This means avoid talking on your cell phone, or listening to your iPod/MP3 player when going to your car in a parking lot, covered parking garage, or walking alone at night.  The distracted or preoccupied person is exactly who an attacker is looking for as his next victim.

2.  Have your keys in your hand and ready as you walk to the car. Be prepared to use your keys as a weapon if you are assaulted or attacked.  A great secondary weapon would be to carry some type of legal personal protection like pepper spray, mace, stun gun or TASER.  Know how to use your keys as a weapon and/or personal protection for self-defense.

3.  Remotely unlock only the driver door when near your car. If you have a newer car, you are able to remotely unlock the doors from a certain distance away.  Wait until you are near the car before you unlock the driver side door.  If you press the remote button more than once it unlocks all doors.  You don’t want a criminal who may be following or watching you attempt to get into your car.  When unlocking your door, always be observant to who is around.  Once inside your car, immediately lock the doors.

4.  Before getting into your car (especially at night) make sure no one is hiding inside.  Carry a loud personal alarm with a flashlight built in so you can easily check inside the car at night.  Many people are not in the habit of locking their car doors.  They should develop this safety habit .  Don’t make it too easy for the criminal to find an unlocked car, hide inside, and wait to attack his unsuspecting victim.  Always lock your car doors.

5.  Don’t leave valuables unattended.  Criminals love an opportunity and if they see a package or purse unattended they may decide to rip it off.  When unloading shopping packages, groceries or strapping your baby inside the car, put your purse in the front seat area first.  Always be aware and monitor who is nearby.  This can help you avoid being attacked.

6.  Be ready to run for your life if confronted by an attacker.  If you’re going to be shopping for hours, be sure to wear comfortable shoes…and that’s not high heels.  If you are attacked going to your car, you may not be able to get away quickly if you’re wearing 3” high heels.  Keep in mind that if attacked your main goal is to disable the attacker enough to quickly get away to safety.  And that means running like crazy.  Nix the heels for some comfortable shoes. Think safety first.

7.  Avoid parking near large vehicles, lots of high shrubbery to hide in, or up close to a building – especially when by yourself.  If you are walking to your car alone after dark in an unlit area covered with shrubs, you may become a target for an attacker looking for an easy victim.  If you can’t find a parking spot and end up parking in a "bad" location, have a trusted friend or ask the mall security to walk you to your car (if you are at the shopping mall).

These seem like such simple common sense tips, but it’s amazing how people forget - then end up being a victim of a robbery or criminal attack.  Develop your own personal safety plan so these tips are engrained and automatically become a habit.

Personal Protection–Your Defense Against An Attacker!

Personal Protection - Tri-Pack Pepper Spray.. Protection On Your keychain..In Your Car..In Your Home!

Pepper Sprays are just one form of non-lethal personal protection that you can carry for self-defense.  If you are in a high risk job where you meet with strangers, work a late night shift, are a college student, or just want to know you have a way to protect yourself if you are ever attacked, then carrying some type of protection like Pepper Spray may be a good choice.

When you read the daily newspaper or watch the nightly news, you see more and more personal and home robberies, people being attacked when walking alone - especially during the holiday season - and violent carjackings.  All of these crimes are becoming more prevalent.  What is a person to do to protect themselves?  You cannot totally rely upon the police to be there to protect you or even rely upon other people who may be nearby.  The responsibility for protecting yourself is up to YOU!

If you are going to carry some type of defense spray like the Pepper Spray or Mace Spray, you need to do a couple of things:

Believe it or not the right to protect ourselves with non-lethal protection devices is not always a RIGHT in some states, counties, or jurisdictions.  You will need to check with local law enforcement officials to find out what the laws are in your area.  I know it sounds crazy that a law-abiding person who wants to protect themselves with only non-lethal protection against a violent attacker who may possess a lethal weapon, but that is how the law is set up.  (And you wonder who the law is designed to protect).

When you purchase your pepper spray, you will want to do a few practice drills to make sure you know how to spray the device and how NOT to accidentally spray yourself.  You’ll receive information with your unit that discusses how to use the product, but it is very minor information.  My recommendation would be to get a very informative 32-page booklet entitled "The Facts About Defense Sprays And How To Use Them…"  This booklet will give you precise information about how to use the device and if attacked - dropping an attacker to his knees.  You can get this booklet and all types of personal protection at www.thepersonalsecuritystore.com.

The Tri-Pack Pepper Spray is an excellent package because it allows you to carry one of the spray units on your keychain.  As you are walking to your car with keychain in hand, you are prepared.  Always be alert and aware of your surroundings.  Because this is the holiday season, we have a tendency is to be preoccupied on things other than our personal safety.  For example, as you are leaving the mall with a bundle of Christmas packages trying to find your car in the parking lot, take a moment to look around and make sure no one is following you or that there aren’t strangers hanging around your car.  Have your pepper spray in hand along with your keys and know what to do if attacked.

The second spray unit in the package is for your car.  You can leave it in the glove compartment or wherever you can easily get to it if attacked while in your car.  Before you get into your car again look around to see if there are any strangers nearby and then quickly get inside and lock the doors.

If you have someone carjack your vehicle, evaluate the situation.  Does he have a weapon?  How has he forced his way into your vehicle - your side or the passenger side?  You will need to determine the best way to escape this situation.  If he carjacker is unarmed and you are going to use the pepper spray for protection, remember in close quarters when you spray the unit at his face, you may get some of the spray as well.  It is a good idea to formulate and have a plan ready in your mind if this type of scenario happens.  For me, I would probably take my chances with some spray in an attempt to escape; however, each one of us has to make that decision should it happen to us.

The third spray unit is for your home or wherever you want to keep it.  More and more burglaries and home invasions are happening while people are home.  If you open your door to a stranger - not thinking properly - and they try to force their way into your home, your only protection may be the pepper spray sitting in the basket near the door.  Grab it and spray the perpetrator in the face.  If you have your cell phone or portable phone with you, quickly call 911 for help.  If you have an alarm system with a keypad near your door, quickly press the panic button to set off the alarm.  Most alarm companies dispatch the police immediately on a panic alarm.  A loud alarm going off would most likely cause the intruder to quickly leave.  However, it could also enrage him so be prepared in this scenario situation as well.

Remember, carry your protection spray with you if it is legal within your city/county/state and practice using it.  Having some type of personal protection device will give you a little more confidence and peace of mind that you can protect and defend yourself if attacked.

I highly recommend women take a self-defense class to become mentally and physically educated.  You will learn techniques and tactics on the best ways to protect and defend yourself against criminal attacks. Check with your local law enforcement to see if they offer classes such as RAD Self-Defense training.

Review in your mind various scenarios of personal assaults or attacks so you will be prepared twill know how to automatically react should it happen to you!  Most importantly - Refuse to be a victim of crime no matter where you are!!

Are High End Shopping Malls A Target Rich Environment For Perpetrators?

Are you a high end target for the criminal mall perpetrator?  You might want to examine yourself and your holiday shopping habits before you hit the mall this Friday.  Then watch this video to learn just what criminal predators are looking for as they prey upon unsuspecting women at high end shopping malls across America.   Be sure to review the mall personal safety tips at the end - tips we already KNOW yet it never hurts to remind ourselves of how important personal safety is during the holiday season.

As the Holiday Season officially kicks off on Black Friday, November 27th, it is imperative that women especially consider their personal safety while they are at the shopping mall, as they approach their vehicle in the mall parking lot, as they drive home, and when they are at home.

We normally think of the holiday season as a time of thankfulness, joy and giving unto others.  Yet, there are predators who are preying upon vulnerable, unsuspecting women who will be victims of their criminal acts.  This video depicts a stark reality of what may be on the mind of a "criminal predator - perpetrator" who will have no qualms about attacking, hurting, and even viciously murdering women in order to get what he wants!

It is up to women to realize that these types of crimes are happening and to proactively protect yourself and your family wherever you are.  If someone is planning to attack you in the shopping mall, don’t make it easy for him to do so.  Be alert, be aware of your surroundings, have your keys ready and carry some type of Pepper Spray, Mace, Personal Alarm, TASER, or Stun Gun for personal protection.  Noise is one of the biggest deterrents so if attacked make as much noise as possible! (Personal protection @ www.thepersonalsecuritystore.com).

Personal Security, Self-Defense & Staying Safe In A ‘Violent Culture’

Staying Safe In A Violent Culture

There have been so many cases recently where young women have been abducted never to be seen again. Or young women have been murdered - one in particular by a co-worker.  Then you have children who have been abducted and to the horror of the parents have been found murdered.  What is becoming of our society?  Why is there so much violence going on in our country?  How do we keep ourselves and our children safe in a violent culture?

The violence against women is staggering!  It should make all women, men, and parents take dramatic action to ensure they can protect themselves and their children against violent predators.  There are sexual predators and child molesters out there lerking and stalking…ready and waiting for the perfect time to pounce upon their victim!  When you do not anticipate an attack or are not prepared to protect and defend yourself, then you are at a very great disadvantage!

Stay Aware..Stay Alert..Stay Alive

Being aware and alert to your surroundings no matter where you are is vitally important!  Don’t get into the mindset that this type of violence won’t affect you and your family.  That only causes you to become complacent.   It shouldn’t take a heartbreaking loss of life - a murder, a violent attack, a homicide by a violent maniac - for people to wakeup and take action to protect themselves and their children.  But sometimes that is exactly what it takes for people to wake up and take action.

Here is an article from Robert Siciliano about staying safe in a violent culture by learning and using personal safety awareness strategies and self-defense training and techniques.   (CLICK HERE TO READ MORE).

Parents protect your children

There are self-defense programs available for kids.  RAD Self-Defense For Kids is one such program that is available in cities throughout the U.S.  Women can also take a RAD Self-Defense class in their local community.  Most colleges and universities offer RAD training classes on camplus.  Check with local law enforcement to see what type of self-defense programs they offer.  There are some amazing self-defense experts online who offer programs through DVD’s or on-site company programs.

Personal Protection Products

Don’t forget there are excellent personal protection products available that can be a secondary level of protection and a backup to your self-defense training.  You may want to carry pepper spray on your keychain, in your purse, or keep it in your car.  Products like Pepper Spray, Mace, TASER C2, Stun Gun or Personal Alarms are non-lethal devices and are meant to disable an attacker enough for you to get away to safety and call 911.

If you carry one of these products, know how to properly use it.  Go to www.ThePersonalSecurityStore.com and check out all the excellent personal protection products that can help keep you safe.

Here are some personal safety tips from Robert Siciliano when walking.

  • Maintain body language that projects strength.
  • Don’t slump.
  • Walk with purpose.
  • Maintain good posture.
  • Project a tough facial expression.
  • Use eye contact that "turns a man to stone" and doesn’t seem welcoming.
  • Be aware of your surroundings, especially things that are out of place.
  • Be aware of the body language of others.
  • Listen to your intuition.
  • Mentally practice "what ifs" — that is, figure out what you would do if something happened.

Women At Risk-In Home Sales Safety & Self-Defense

Are you an outside sales representative who goes into people’s home as part of your job?  For the most part you are going into a complete stranger’s home.  Do you take the necessary precautions to ensure your personal safety when you are on the job?  Do you carry any type of personal protection device or have you taken a self-defense class? Do you have a Personal Safety Plan so you know what do if physically attacked or assaulted?  You should be answering these questions because women are coming face to face with these types of scenarios every day.

The In-Home Sales Consultant has potentially more risk than the traditional sales position because you are going into a complete stranger’s home. This may be your first time at meeting this potential customer. Perhaps you have not even spoken over the telephone because the appointment was preset for you. The unknown is sometimes the danger factor. Other factors that determine the vulnerability of this type of position can depend upon the type of product you are selling and who you will be meeting with - male or female alone or a husband and wife team.

If at all possible, call your appointment to confirm, get driving directions, or to get at least a feel for your upcoming meeting. A lot of times just a quick conversation can instinctively let you know this appointment will be fine or it may tell you that you better take someone with you… just in case.

Are you selling home security systems or draperies and blinds to a homeowner? The home security professional may be meeting with the most upstanding citizen in one meeting but in another situation may be meeting with a major drug dealer (homeowner) who needs the ultimate security because of the criminal element they are involved with. You can just imagine which sales position may be more vulnerable and require a higher level of safety.

It is always best to have your personal safety and security as priority number one as you enter and move about your prospect’s (stranger’s) home. Take a few minutes to discuss what you will be looking at inside the home, get to know your prospect and let them know you, look to see where the entry/exit doors are located and always let the homeowner lead the way throughout the home. If your instincts tell you something is wrong, be sure to listen and wrap the meeting up immediately.

Why carrying personal protection with you is so important.

A violent situation can happen anywhere at anytime, even in a prospect’s home. Be sure to arm yourself with some type of self-defense and safety awareness training. And always carry personal protection like pepper/mace spray or a personal alarm with you. You can easily carry pepper spray in your pocket, briefcase, portfolio, on your keys, or in your purse. It’s better to be proactive and safe than attacked or murdered.

Real Estate Agent Safety & Self-Defense Awareness

The Real Estate Professional has a riskier job than one might imagine. Everyday real estate agents are meeting with complete strangers to look at a vacant property or home and are usually meeting alone with the client.

Because of the high number of violent attacks, assaults, and murders of women and men in the real estate profession, the National Association of Realtors has made safety and security programs available to members throughout the U.S.

They realized the dangers that these professionals deal with unwittingly each day. Attending a self-defense class or a real estate agent safety awareness seminar can remind professionals of things they should be aware of each time they meet with new clients. When you follow the personal safety rules and guidelines for your industry, you  make yourself less likely to become a victim of a violent criminal attack.

Many criminals view real estate professionals as "easy prey" because they are usually meeting with women agents — alone - in a vacant or unoccupied location or home. The agent views the meeting with the prospect as a way to sell a home while the criminal prospect may have other motives.

If an attack is part of the criminal’s plan, he will most likely have the upper hand knowing when his imminent attack is coming. The agent on the other agent may have a proactive safety plan in place should something like that happen.   That plan should include being a student of a self-defense training program or a safety awareness class which stresses the importance of always being aware and alert to the surroundings and individuals you are working with at all times.

As a real estate agent in a high risk job your personal safety and security should be a #1 priority.  Keep in mind and follow the rules and guidelines that the NAR has set up. Don’t let a potential client steer you from doing what you know is right. Follow proper guidelines — such as meeting the client first in your office and completing necessary paperwork. If the client persists that they can’t do that, find another way to meet the person in a safe environment.

When meeting with a client to show a home or when hosting an open house, always let your client lead the way as you follow. Keep some distance as you move with the client throughout the home or property and know where they are at all times.  When you first enter a property, find out where each entry and exit doors are located.  Have an escape route if you need it.  If your gut instincts tell you something is wrong, be sure to listen and wrap the meeting up immediately.  Read more

Self-Defense Protection - Banker Safety. Are You At Risk?

Courtesy of Personal Security Solutions, Inc.  Women At Risk - Banker Safety

Banks and credit unions are made up of about 66% women employees. There are bank tellers, human resources, upper management, and a multitude of other professional positions within banks and credit unions held by women. One of the positions within the bank that seems to be extremely vulnerable is the bank teller. With the number of bank robberies increasing, even in small towns, bank employees need to be constantly aware and on alert to anything unusual or potential dangerous mannerisms of those entering the bank and notice.

If you work in the banking industry, what type of self-defense training do you receive from your company?  Sure, a bank employee does not want to pull out a TASER C2 or pepper spray while someone has a gun pointed at them. But it is equally important that employees of the bank or credit union have specific self-defense awareness training and know what to do in these situations and how to protect themselves and those around them.

Due to the nature of the premises and location of a bank or credit union, this can create an opportunity for criminals who are desperate for cash. Keep in mind when you depart from a bank or credit union, the criminal may think you are carrying cash on your person. For those desperate criminals, $20 may seem like a lot of money.

Be Aware and Be Prepared!

As you leave the bank premises, always be aware of your surroundings. Notice the people you pass and those who may be loitering in the parking lot near your car. Be prepared with your pepper spray in your hand or at least where you can get immediate access to it. Keep a personal alarm and/or pepper spray attached to your car keys. As you walk to your car carry yourself with a confident demeanor. Let those with criminal intentions know that you are not going to be a victim so they may as well look elsewhere.

As part of your personal safety plan, take a self-defense or safety awareness training. It is very important to know how to protect and defend yourself if attacked or assaulted.  Self-defense training can give you the confidence and self-empowerment needed in order to fight back. (Check out Dr. Ruthless’ self-defense training for women and men @ www.dr-ruthless.com).

If all else fails, consider being prepared to respond with some type of personal protection.  Remember personal protection devices like pepper spray, Mace, stun guns or TASERs are all non-lethal devices not meant to serious injure or kill a person but only to distract or throw someone off-guard enough for you to get away to safety.

You - and only you -  are responsible for your life.  Protect yourself and save your life!

Stay Aware…Stay Alert…Stay Alive!!
