Self-Defense With An Attitude Celebrates One-Year Anniversary

If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!

Today Self-Defense With An Attitude is celebrating a one-year anniversary blogging about all types of self-defense issues, self-defense techniques and tactics that can help to protect and defend you against an attacker, ways to stay safe whether home or away, personal security and safety awareness issues and much more…..

It’s hard to believe that one full year has gone by since starting SDWAA on December 17, 2007.  That shows how fast time is flying by -"like the flip of a switch."   I have learned so much about internet technology and stuff to increase my blog site traffic as well as how valuable self-defense and personal security awareness knowledge, education, and training really is - especially for women!

Here are some things I’ve done - both business and personal - that have made the past year zoom by.

  1. Started Self-Defense With An Attitude blog on December 17, 2007 knowing very little about blogging.   Today we have (5) blogs and (3) websites.  One website is up for sale along with a related blog site.  However, they were accomplished within the past year.
  2. In February 2008, I left my position as a Commercial Insurance agent since they were putting me on straight commission in a market that was very sluggish.  I thought this was a good time to get my biz cranked up.
  3. Started my second security-related blog - www.homesecurity911.com in Feburary 2008 which is coming along rather well.  We’re able to put valuable home security, home invasion prevention content, related pictures and videos on this site.  As as top security specialist with ADT Security for twenty years, I enjoy blogging about home security and safety related topics.
  4. Took a self-defense class in Chicago called "Fight Like A Girl" and was able to beat on some really nice guys.  Of course, I got tossed around a bit myself, but I learned a lot about fighting techniques and fighting from the ground position.  The thing I learned most was I don’t ever want to get into a knock down drag out fight with a perpetrator/attacker; so I’ll continue to carry my TASER C2 and pepper spray with me wherever I go!
  5. This self-defense training was so cool  I setup an interview with the RAD Self-Defense Instructor from the the Elkhart County Sheriff’s Department, Elkhart, Indiana to learn more about that program.  I added this article and video to my blog site, then ended up taking the RAD Self-Defense Training. Pretty cool.  I learned some great self-defense techniques and tactics and at the end of the training had to go through what is called "Simulation Night."  Sounds pretty scary and guess what…it was!  You are blindfolded and then a really "big" guy attacks you from behind.  You have to use the tools learned over the past 12 hours (4 separate nights).  It was amazing - I knew what to do to fight off the attacker and escape to safety. …it was a  very empowering feeling not just for me but for the other ladies in the class as well.  Women should consider taking this type of self-defense training.  It’s also a great self-confidence builder!
  6. Continued to worked heavily on getting my corporate website completed - Personal Security Solutions.  This took a lot longer than I expected.  I’ve decided I’ll only do blog sites instead of websites from now on.  They are easier to work with and give you a lot more control.
  7. Took a vacation with family to Alabama in April/May.  Then in July went to West Virginia and took the RAD Self-Defense Instructor Certification Course.  It was 3-grueling days (8-full hours a day) of non-stop learning all about fight techniques, tactics, and instructor training.  At the end we again had a simulation night.  I felt much more competent, confident, and empowered when I had to fight.  Afterwards we were  tested!  Received my instructor certification.  Glad to get that completed.
  8. Finished my Personal Security Solutions website in late August first part of September.  Added a security product store - The Personal Security Store.com where we sell personal protection products.
  9. Added a third blog site to the corporate site - www.personalsecuritysolutions.com/blog.  The name of the site is actually Personal Security 911.  At some point this site may become it’s own entity.
  10. In October/November set up our fourth blog site - Home Security 101 Workshop.com.  This site is where we have our home security workshop training information, security lunch and learn training programs, and our upcoming teleseminar programs. It links right from the corporate site.
  11. In December began a 3-Month Teleseminar Course - Teleseminar Secrets - so that I can reach, teach and discuss the self-defense and home security topics through a teleseminar program format.  My goal is to talk with other security experts, crime prevention specialists, self-defense experts, and others who can bring a wealth of knowledge and real-life experiences to my readers/listeners.
  12. In December joined a Blogging Membership Site - "Becoming A Blogger" - Yaro Starak and Gideon, to further my knowledge and education on blogging. So far so good, however, I realize I know a lot of the basic stuff - but I am always open to learning.  They have some advanced stuff coming up shortly.

Anyway, the year has flown by and we feel a lot has been accomplished to enhance our overall business and blogging success.  We have been working on our goals and plans for 2009.  We’re planning to add an internet radio program - Blog Talk Radio to both security blog sites the first part of January 2009.  We’re looking at 2009 to be a great year!!

For all of you who have stopped off at our site - THANKS!  For those of you who have commented on our site- THANKS!  And for those of you who jam up my email with spam because you were spamming our site - well I have another word for you!.

Everyone take care and have a great holiday season!

Self-Defense - Fight Plan of Action If Attacked

Here is a video from Fight Like A Girl and Win that gives you some great ideas of potential weapons already in your purse that you can use to fend off an attacker, plus areas of the body to aim for to disable the attacker allowing you to get away to safety.  If you are walking alone to your car or out late at night, have your weapon in your hand and be ready to use it if you have to.  Trying to find a weapon in your purse - the "black hole" - may be nearly impossible if under attack.  Be ready ahead of time and be prepared to fight if attacked.

Over the past year I have written about how each of us needs to develop a written Personal Safety Plan of Action.  This plan should acknowledge that personal safety is one of our #1 priorities and by establishing specific rules and guidelines it can help us avoid dangerous pitfalls that could put us in harms way.                      .

Your plan should include some common-sense guidelines like "being aware of your surroundings, being alert to various situations, listening to your inner voice when things don’t seem quite right, safety on the road as you travel in your vehicle, and more."   These common-sense issues can get pushed aside as we become so overwhelmed with dealing with everyday issues, our jobs, our families, and life in general.

Attending a personal security and safety seminar can be a valuable part of your plan because it reiterates common-sense things you already know and brings back to the forefront the importance of personal safety in our everyday lives.  As you sit in one of these classes you may get an "Ah-ha" moment when you hear something that you know you should be doing but don’t - for whatever reason.  This is now the time to get back on track and incorporate these things back into your daily safety routine.   Read more

Be Prepared, Be Ready, And Know How To Fight For Your Life

If You Come Face To Face With An Evil, Violent Predator - Be Prepared To Fight For Your Life!

Back in the old days women were told if faced with a confrontation, physical attack, or sexual assault from a male prepetrator  – don’t fight back you’ll only inflame the guy and that will make him madder and meaner.  You were told to try and reason with the attacker – try to negotiate your way out of being raped or brutally beaten up -   unfortunately many women were still violently murdered.

Not Today Ladies!!! You need to consider that there has been an increase in violent crimes and assaults against women – both young and old – in record numbers all across our country.  And what are women doing to protect themselves from this offensive crime?

Women of all ages are starting to stand up and say “WE’RE NOT GOING TO TAKE THIS ANYMORE" and they are learning how to defend and protect themselves.  Women are becoming skilled in self-defense and safety awareness techniques and finding that inner female warrior that says, I’m not going to become a crime victim of some perpetrator’s whim!!” .   Read more

Campus Safety For Women Starts With Taking A RAD Self-Defense Class

Video Courtesy of George Mason University for RAD Self-Defense Class

Ladies - Are you looking forward to your 2008-2009 college year as an exciting adventure? Is this your first year of college..or are you a seasoned college veteran?  What a great time to be going to college - learning about new things, meeting new friends, and experiencing one of the greatest times of your life.

As a concerned parent who had both a son and daughter go through college, my suggestion for young ladies as they start the new school year is to check with your college/university to see if they offer RAD Self-Defense training and sign up.  The class is about 4-weeks long and 2-3 hours one night a week.  You learn about personal safety tactics, common sense awareness and self-defense techniques, and how to defend and protect yourself if  attacked or assaulted.  The more you know about defending yourself the safer you will be. Simulation Night For Our RAD Self-Defense Class

Tonight - Tuesday, 3-25-08 - was the last of our RAD Self-Defense class held at the Elkhart County Sheriff’s Department in Elkhart, Indiana.  (Although I was able to videotape some of the ladies in class, I forgot that we are not able to put the videos on youtube or our website).  The last night is known as "simulation".  This is where you have scenario-type situations set up in which you will be attacked by a perpetrator.  The ladies in this class seemed pretty excited about our last night…maybe even a little apprehensive because we were all unsure of exactly what would happen and how we would respond using the self-defense techniques we learned over the last (3) weeks. Gutzy Self-Defense For Women-The Ultimate Palm Strike

Checkout Dr. Ruthless’ website @ www.dr-ruthless.com

This woman has definately got the self-defense moves, the self-defense techniques, and the gutziness to make me want to learn what she knows so I can add it to my safety plan of action.  I never want to be a victim of crime.  To be one step ahead of a predator, I want to know if attacked that I have the confidence, the fortitude, the know-how and the flat out strength and power to fight back with everything I have to survive!

When you think about it, why should some dirt-bag predator determine that your life is worth nothing and he has the right to take it from you…and your family.  Just the thought of that scenario should make women angry as all get out!!

Watch the self-defense palm strike moves in the video and learn them.   If attacked, this could be one of the ultimate weapons you effectively use to get away to safety.

Look at taking a good self-defense class - you know I highly recommend the RAD Self-Defense class.

Realtor Personal Safety Awareness Program

The following video gives excellent safety tips for realtors.  Many of the safety tips will seem pretty obvious.  But we all can become a little complacent - especially with our home and personal security.  Just when we let our guard down the unexpected happens.  That’s why it is a good idea to review personal safety habits that should be a part of our life… and could help save our life in dangerous situations.

On Wednesday my business associate from ADT Security and I will be giving a Realtor Personal & Home Security Safety Awareness Program to one of the largest Century 21 offices in Northern Indiana.  Our program provides targeted personal safety and home security strategies that each agent can use on a daily basis.  We believe that personal security starts in the home.  Therefore, your home must be a safe haven whether you or family members are home or away.

Experts agree that the single most important step towards ensuring an individual’s total personal security is to make the decision to refuse to be a victim.  That means you must have an overall personal safety plan or strategy in place before you need it and be able to aggressively defend yourself if attacked.

Our goal is to provide a program of personal safety and security, self-awareness, and empowerment that will enable real estate agents to protect themselves and not become a victim of an attack by a perpetrator, an unruly prospect, or customer.

We all need to make personal safety and security a proactive habit 24/7.  We can then ensure we’re one step ahead of a predator who preys on defenseless women.

Remember, Stay Aware…Stay Alert…Stay Alive!

Self-Defense With An Attitude: Don’t Mess With Dr. Ruthless!

x

Dr. Ruthless, Self-Defense/Black Belt Expert

You need to watch this video of self-defense/black belt instructor Dr. Ruthless.  She definitely has an attitude that says, “I will not become a victim of your crime today, Buddy.”  And she looks like she can beat the crap out of guys twice her size.

Melissa Soalt aka Dr. Ruthless has developed self-defense techniques and tactics that when used appropriately will absolutely surprise a male attacker and send HIM running in another direction.  It’s all in how you carry yourself, your mental attitude, your mental toughness, and what you have learned from your self-defense training that will give you the confidence to fight off an attacker.

You need to find your inner strength.  If you have taken a self-defense course or purchased self-defense videos/DVDs, you should practice…practice…practice the techniques you have learned.  After your self-defense class is completed and over, you will want to occasionally visualize in your mind the techniques you learned and how they would apply to specific types of attacks.  It is a good idea to have a basic self-defense training video on-hand, similar to ones listed on my site, that you can refer to from time to time. iKickback.com

Each day as we leave the safety and comfort of our home, we need to have a plan of how we will defend ourselves should we become a victim of a violent attack by a crazy perpetrator.

Your main goal in this situation should always be to escape to safety.  However, you must realize that you may have to fight your way to safety.  Should it come down to your life – are you going to accept the consequences of the attack or are you going to fight for your life?  If you decide to fight, be sure to fight with everything you have! Self-Defense Fighting Technique in the Bedroom

x

Shihan Michael Pace

It is frightening to think about an intruder getting into your home while you are there, especially into your bedroom while you are asleep.  Women who live alone or have spouses who travel frequently may feel more vulnerable.

No doubt…none of us would want this situation to ever happen.  It is a good idea to be proactive in thinking what you would do to protect yourself if you were awakened in the middle of the night with an intruder in your bedroom. Read more
