As part of my self-defense growth and training I have collected many self-defense books and DVDs from some excellent sources. Every bit of information and training that we learn can ultimately help us protect and defend ourselves should we ever be confronted by a sexual assault. (Check the books/DVDs recommended on the right side of my blog. This training DVD is listed).
Self-defense programs are designed to empower women with the necessary skills to effectively defend ourselves while building the confidence needed to take charge of our own personal safety. Women who resist are twice as likely to escape injury as others. One analysis of 3,000 actual assaults shows that half of the attackers fled from a woman who was willing to resist! The Key is to learn how to effectively resist!
Over the weekend I took a Fight Like A Girl self-protection class in Chicago, Illinois, and I will take three more classes to complete the series. F.L.A.G. is designed to offer the best and most effective self-defense techniques for women in realistic sexual assault or domestic violence situations. Woman can reasonably expect to defend themselves against the most frequent and probable attacks after learning and practicing these techniques.
The class was offered through The Winning Edge Group and the training was excellent. It was 2.5 hours of hands on training, learning the tools and knowledge necessary to handle the most common sexual assault/attack scenarios. Ultimately, these are techniques to learn that can your life. Many of the techniques were new to me, but very effective in throwing off an attacker. The owner of The Winning Edge Group, Mr. Bruce Gunderson along with his wife, Kelly Gunderson, was great about going through each of the steps demonstrating what we would need to know in order to avoid a situation or to defend ourselves should we be attacked.
I have to give a big kudos to the instructors who took the abuse from each woman in the class so that we could all learn the various techniques. I went home after the class feeling pretty exhausted but also feeling really good that I knew a lot more about protecting myself than when I came there. This is an exceptional class that I think all women, at any age, should look at taking.
If you live in the Chicago area, contact The Winning Edge Group at (847) 292-0900 or (630) 567-7686 to learn more about when their next Fight Like A Girl class will be held.
The Self-Defense Principles:
1. Stay aware of people in your surroundings. Pay attention to those around you and if someone appears to be moving too close to you. Trust your instincts.
2. Stay with people. Do not ever let yourself be taken somewhere. This “second crime scene” could be where your worst nightmare resides.
3. Keep a barrier between you and the bad guy. Use a barrier to block him or use distance to gain time.
4. Attract attention. Yell, scream, create a disturbance, blow the horn, throw things.
5. Control his hips and his hands. He will hit you, slap you, stab you or shoot you, but he has to use his hands to do the damage.
6. Use your strongest weapons against his weakest targets. His eyes, throat, groin, and knees are your primary targets. Secondary targets are his face and abdomen. Strong weapons you can employ are your kicks using the bottom of your feet, your elbows, hammerfists, and palm heel strikes. (Women’s Self-Defense Institute).
