Spring is definitely in the air and for a lot of people – this is jogging or walking weather.  If you are like me, you want to make sure you are getting your exercise – your cardio – so you feel and look better for the coming summer season.

But guess what?  The fact that you might think nothing of throwing on your cute little shorts – your halter top – pulling your hair back into a cute little ponytail and strapping your MP3 player to your upper arm and into your ears – means you should definitely be aware of some crazy predator out there looking for someone just like you – happy go lucky, with the CD or MP3 player going on in her ear, and nonchalantly jogging or walking.  (The perfect prey).

Before you do your final stretch to hit the road, consider your personal safety along the way.  You may be in a truly positive mode as you’re hitting the road – but the sad fact is – crime is rampant in certain areas – and there are predators out there just looking for someone who appears to be totally unaware of what is going on around her.

When you are jogging or walking, you may not even hear someone coming up behind you.  The majority of attackers will usually come from behind.  When you pass someone and he smiles and waves at you, he could immediately turn around and attack you from behind when you aren’t even aware.

The same awareness that applies to everyday street safety is the same awareness that you need to apply while you are jogging/walking.  You must keep an open eye to anyone that appears or looks strange.  Peer over your shoulder as you pass that guy who is overly friendly – smiling and waving – just to make sure he’s not switching gears in your direction.

The number of women joggers/walkers who have been attacked, assaulted, and even murdered over the last five years is staggering.  With proper security and safety awareness, a self-defense mindset, and carrying some type of a personal protection device(s), you can become a woman warrior on the road….to better health and safety!

Here are some personal security jogging and walking tips that are designed to keep you safe and secure:

• Always Stay Aware, Stay Alert and ultimately Stay Alive!
• If you must jog/walk alone, be very aware of your surroundings, especially secluded areas.
• Avoid jogging or walking along a secluded lake or river pathway.  Always try to walk with a partner or take your dog along.
• Carefully check male jogger/walkers as you pass them – coming or going – as you never know when they may bolt around and attack you from behind.  Just be aware!  Sometimes the friendly ones are the ones you should be wary of.
• Carry some type of personal protection/safety device – like a Taser C2, Mace Pepper Spray “Hot Walkers” walking weights, Pepper Spray, or a Personal Alarm w/lights.
• If you have headphones on, make sure you can hear noise – like sirens or someone approaching you quickly.  Don’t become so distracted with listening to your MP3 or music that you fail to see signals of an oncoming attack.
• If you must jog/walk at night, do so in well-lit, busy areas and with a partner.  Your health and safety will appreciate it.  Plus it is the smart thing to do!
• If you are wearing a halter top and short shorts – be EXTRA, EXTRA aware of predators around you.  Believe me -  ladies of all ages - we should be able to wear what we want when we want, but the fact is there are idiots out there that prey on women – especially those dressed scantily.  My advice is to know some self-defense tactics and always carry your personal protection AND cell phone with you as you are jogging or walking.
• Let someone know where you are going and when you expect to return.  Carry your charged up cell phone.

Ladies, have a great Spring and Summer.  Keep up your workout program of jogging or walking, but always keep your personal safety first and foremost!

Remember, Stay Aware…Stay Alert…Stay Alive!

Wow Cheryl, what a powerful video and a great, informative post. We all need to be aware of our surroundings. Not just when out jogging but when going to the grocery store or to the mall. I believe if we have some type of self defense training, we can better protect ourselves. (I want to be like her!). Thanks for the great information.
