Real estate professionals – let someone know the name of the client you are meeting. You can inform the administrative person in your office, a co-worker, your spouse, best friend, or whomever. Just be sure you’ve given them the name of the person, where you are going, and the approximate time you will return. Try to give as much detail as you can about the person you are meeting with.
Whenever possible, make sure your client knows you have shared this information with someone. You are less likely to be attacked if the criminal knows you will be missed and he/she can be identified.
When I was an in-home security consultant, I would let the office assistant know my appointment details when I was meeting one-on-one with a gentleman. This was just to be on the safe side and it made me feel better knowing someone else knew my whereabouts. If I got an uneasy feeling about an appointment, I would let her know the time I would be finished with the appointment and that I would call her right away. If she didn’t get a call from me at the time we had set, she was to try calling me. If she didn’t get an answer, then we had further procedures.
You will need to determine the safety and security practices that will work best for you. Always trust your gut feelings. Not everybody is going to be violent criminal, however, it is better to be safe than sorry. Especially in this crazy world we live in today!
The statistics from the Real Estate Safety Council indicate that twenty-one real estate professionals were murdered while on the job in the United States in 2000. A total of 206 agents died as a result of violent assaults from 1982 to 2000. Many more were raped, beaten, and robbed.
These statistics are alarming, but they are used to illustrate the importance of taking safety precautions in your daily work. The very nature of showing real estate can be risky, for both men and women. You can reduce your exposure to assault by following simple, common sense safety tips that have been compiled by crime victims and other real-estate agents across the country.
You probably use some sort of Customer Identification/Itinerary Form. If you don’t, design one that will include the name, address, phone number(s), and vehicle information of the prospect you are meeting. Also include addresses of homes you will be viewing. The information found on your itinerary form can assist police in locating you. Victims of crimes can be missing for days before co-workers begin to worry, unless we tell them when to expect us back.
Be sure to take responsibility for your own safety. If your office doesn’t provide some type of self-defense awareness training, empower yourself by finding a class to take and carry your own personal protection – pepper spray, mace, a loud personal alarm, or a C2 Taser.
Remember, Stay Aware…Stay Alert…Stay Alive!
