The Equalizer - Self Defense Training Video

Do you work in a profession that requires you to meet prospects and clients away from your office, either in their home or a home that you’re trying to sell?  If you’re a real estate professional or an in-home alarm sales professional then that is part of your job.  Meeting clients who you may not know in an unfamiliar location can leave you vulnerable.  Have you really considered the danger that you may be putting yourself in?  Most of us do not.  It’s the old adage….it won’t happen to me.  Attacks on women happen every single day.  It’s important to have a safety plan in mind in case you ever find yourself in a dangerous situation.

For almost 20 years I was an in-home sales professional for a major alarm company.  I made daily visits to homes in some of the nicest neighborhoods and homes in some of the roughest neighborhoods.  I happened to be one of the few women in-home sales professionals so I learned to be tough.  Since I worked predominantly with men, my attitude sometimes had to match theirs, otherwise I would have been pushed around.  I didn’t let that happen.

When I received a company lead and it was a male client, I always contacted the customer to confirm the time and to get a gut feel for the person I was about to meet.  Sometimes the specific area of town that I was going to made it imperative to call ahead or take a co-worker to the appointment with me.  If my gut said, "no", I would give the prospect lead to someone else.  There was no sense in taking a chance if your intuition is telling you otherwise.  Always listen to your instincts.  It could save your life.

Companies who employee people in positions where they must meet clients in residential areas or isolated locations should offer some type of self-defense training and awareness.  In the early 1990’s crime seemed to be growing in my area and there were shootings almost every day.  I remember asking my local management about providing some type of self-defense training, and I was brushed off as though it was unimportant.  Today, I hope your local management is more receptive to this type of inquiry.

On the job I carried pepper spray with me at all times.  I once met with a single man who lived approximately 75 miles from my office.  He ended up have a pistol lying on the chair next to him during our entire meeting and I did not notice it until he picked it up and showed it to me.  At that that point I decided to carry some type of personal security device to protect myself.  It’s important to maintain an attitude of confidence - not fear - because people who are in the position to victimize can detect fear.  Take a self-defense/awareness class or purchase a personal security device like a C2 Taser or pepper spray and you will feel much more confident and alert.

Listed below are (4) things that women can do everyday to establish their own safety and security program.  Whether you are in real estate sales, an in-home alarm sales professional, a bank employee, or a retail associate who works late hours  - consider incorporating these (4) things into your daily routine:

1.  Always carry your cell phone with you - fully charged - in hand when outside after dark.  Have 911 programmed into your speed dial and don’t hesitate to call for help.

2.  Let others know where you will be and who you are meeting with during your work day.  Going into homes of unknown clients can put you into vulnerable situations.

3.  Ladies, always trust your gut feelings and your instincts.  If it doesn’t feel right, either don’t go or take someone with you.  It’s certainly not worth your life for a sale.

4.  Get an equalizer and carry it with you at all times.  I’m not advocating guns and violence, but I am talking about carrying pepper spray, mace or either a stun gun or a C2 Taser gun.  These devices are only meant to incapacitate someone long enough for you to get away to safety.

So there you have it!  Four simple things you can do to help keep youself safe.  Remember, if your company does not provide a self-defense awareness class, check online or with your local law enforcement for a recommendation.  Even taking a kickboxing class can give you a sense of empowerment.

Until next time Stay Aware…Stay Alert…Stay Alive!

Thanks. It’s all about being aware isn’t it? I believe a lot of women get very complacent because they live in low crime areas. But even at that, it just takes one lose cannon who assaults someone to change that.
