Over the weekend I attended an NRA Refuse To Be A Victim Class in upper Michigan. This is a program that I am getting certified to train others in - so I wanted to see exactly how the program was structured. It is primarily designed to provide safety awareness in about 7-8 areas of our daily lives that can keep us safe and ulimately help save our lives. A big part of the program discussed self-defense and personal security.
Many of the areas that were covered are areas we all know about but because we are so busy with our "everyday life" we tend to become complacent about our personal security and forget. Safety awareness reminders are good for all of us. If we learn one good concept from a training program like this, it will definitely be worth the time and investment we put into it.
People say you shouldn’t become paranoid about your personal security and start to question every action by another person. I totally agree that we should not become paranoid, but that we should develop an acute awareness of what’s going on around us at all times. Almost like a silent "watchdog" who sees and knows everything.
Since I was in the security alarm business for 20 years I developed a high sensitivity to things and people around me. I formulated a mental plan of what I would do should this or that happen. I made others aware of people and places I would be meeting as a precaution. In my 20 years I was never attacked by anyone although there were some prospects that I felt very uncomfortable around and maybe even slightly fearful. I never showed any fear around these prospects - and always carried myself with a confident demeanor. I did carry pepper spray with me most of the time, which helped in my overall personal safety plan.
As you read my articles, the thing I want to stress is just to be aware, be alert, have a plan of action, take a self-defense class if you can - it really is a lot of fun - and gives you a tremendous amount of empowerment, and overall be mentally prepared on what you would do should you be attacked or assaulted by a predator.
As always, Stay Aware…Stay Alert…Stay Alive!
