Self-Defense: Steps to Survival (Excellent Book)

This book is dedicated to everyone who was ever violated and didn’t fight back.  Maybe you didn’t know how, or you were scared, you thought you’d be hurt worse, or you thought it was your fault.  It wasn’t your fault.  It’s important to understand how you can resist this kind of situation should you ever be faced with it again.

People are not attacked simply because they were in the wrong place at the wrong time.  Most assailants are known by their victims and plan their attacks far in advance.  Knowing this, you should know how to defend yourself should you ever be concerned about a specific relationship in your life or as a general safety precaution.

The book, Self Defense: Steps to Survival by Katy Mattingly, teaches simple, easy to master techniques that work in real-life scenarios.  You don’t have to study martial arts or be an athletic person to use these skills effectively.  At your own pace you will learn the following skills:you will learn the following skills:

o  verbal defenses against harassment

o  how to establish boundaries

o  how to spot and assess potential perpetrators

o  standing defense using your arms, hands, legs, and feet

o  ground defenses including arm strikes and kicks

o  how to break free from holds or pins on the ground

o  knockout blows

o  defenses against weapons and multiple assailants

Women often assume they are at a physical disadvantage for being smaller, perhaps older, or not physically fit enought to protect themselves if attacked.  According to the book’s author, Katy Mattingly, none of these prevent women from fighting back.  In fact, the average 8-year old is capable of breaking an attacker’s kneecap!  Women can defend themselves against much taller and heavier perpetrators if they know some important steps or manuevers.

According to Mattingly, the following (3) obstacles leave women vulnerable to attacks:

Never having been taught -  Despite the high rate of victimization in this country, most women have never been taught how to defend themselves and most likely believe they would be unable to protect themselves against someone with a weapon.

Lack of confidence - Mattingly emphasizes that utilizing self-defense techniques doesn’t require that a person be extremely strong or have martial arts training.  Mattingly demonstrates easy-to-follow techniques, provides tips on become more aware of your surroundings, and teaches the use of vocalization as a deterrent.

Believing myths about violence - Believing incorrect information often leaves women open for attack.  Many women are taught who to be fearful of, in general, and where they are most likely at risk.  In the news we rarely hear the success stories of victims who were able to protect themselves and get away from their attacker.  Thus, this leaves women fearful of the reprocautions of defending themselves against an attacker.

Reading this book will help you hone your senses, increase awareness, and learn the techniques that could save your life.

Also, look into a local self-defense awareness class - that may be the empowerment and self-confidence builder you need to know how to defend yourself if necessary.  Even if you live in a small town or what you consider a safe neighborhood, do not think you are immune to criminal assault.  It can happen anywhere.

My intent is not to make you paranoid of your surroundings, but rather to help you build the tools you need to be a more aware, confident, and prepared person in case you ever find yourself in an unwanted attack situation.  The key is staying sharp and being ready to protect yourself with a plan of action.
