Tonight - Tuesday, 3-25-08 - was the last of our RAD Self-Defense class held at the Elkhart County Sheriff’s Department in Elkhart, Indiana. (Although I was able to videotape some of the ladies in class, I forgot that we are not able to put the videos on youtube or our website). The last night is known as "simulation". This is where you have scenario-type situations set up in which you will be attacked by a perpetrator. The ladies in this class seemed pretty excited about our last night…maybe even a little apprehensive because we were all unsure of exactly what would happen and how we would respond using the self-defense techniques we learned over the last (3) weeks.
It was very interesting to watch some of the ladies in the beginning of the class being a little timid with their verbalizations-yells, punches and kicks. Yet during simulation when they were put on the matt with the guy in the red rubber suit - these ladies turned into warriors. Amazing!! It is truly empowering going from not knowing self-defense techniques to knowing situations you can confidently respond to and fight back enough to escape and save your life. And that is the whole purpose of the self-defense techniques…to learn what to do to defuse and avoid an aggressive encounter with a predator looking to do you harm. If that doesn’t work, then your next option may be to fight for your life. If it is, you need to be willing to fight with everything you have and don’t give up!!!
I commend all of the ladies who were in the class. Anybody who did not go through simulation..that is your choice which is fine. I am sure not everyone does the simulation in each class. It is certainly a decision that each woman has to make for themselves.
I caught myself today thinking of what I would do in the scenarios "walk in the park" or "going to the ATM machine." Guess what I found? When you are face to face with an attacker, the adrenaline starts pumping and you have to truly focus and use all of the techniques you learned. Tonight it felt like I was pulling everything out of the bag….hammer punches to the head…knee kicks to the groin..kicking non-stop when on the ground…punches to the groin. You try to use whatever skill you’ve learned that will enable you to throw the guy off guard enough to get out of there to safety. That’s why it will be very important to practice…practice…practice the techniques you have learned. if you have time, attend one or two of the classes again.
I have to give kudos to Det. Norma Albers who was an awesome instructor. She definately knows her stuff. I mentioned a self-defense expert named Dr. Ruthless…(I have a post which includes her video a few posts down..watch it)…and how much of a warrior fighter she is. I think we should call Detective Albers….Det. Ruthless…because she’s right up there. I highly recommend Detective Alber’s class to anyone. She’s an excellent instructor. Thanks Norma.
All ladies who are looking for a RAD self-defense class to increase awareness and self-defense abilities should check with their local sheriff or police department to see if they have classes available. Anyone in the South Bend -Elkhart, Indiana area could check with the local Elkhart County Sheriff’s Department on upcoming RAD classes.
Also ladies, after you have attended a RAD class you can come back and take a class anywhere for free. Check it out!
Always remember, Stay Aware…Stay Alert…Stay Alive!!
