The first night of the RAD Self-Defense class – which is for women only – was primarily instructional.  Instructor Lon Smith laid the foundation for what we would learn over the next three weeks, tips on our personal safety, and more.

The RAD System’s Basic Physical Defense Instructional Objective is:

“To develop and enhance the options of self-defense so they may become viable considerations to the woman who is attacked.”

That said, this would be considered the first part of our personal protection plan.  I have said many times that we all need to have a plan of action of what we would do if attacked by a predator, perpetrator, scumbag, whatever you want to call the person who preys upon defenseless women.  The fact is he is not going to expect most women to fight back. Therefore, the first step in your Personal Protection Plan is to take a course like RAD, learn what to do if attacked, and fight back like your life depended upon it.  Because it just may!

We learned the four “Risks” of personal safety:

Risk Awareness
Risk Reduction
Risk Recognition
Risk Avoidance

Knowing this is 90% of Self-Defense education.

One of the key elements that I heard during this class is that women need to be AWARE of their surroundings.  If you believe “it’s not going to happen to me” then this attitude may keep you from being mentally alert to your surroundings and the environment in which you live and work.  An alert mind will be the necessary catalyst needed for protecting yourself.  Reminding yourself that you are not invincible and trusting your instincts are the first steps in the right direction.

The instructor discussed Risk Reduction Strategies while in the home, in public transportation, dating, in your vehicle, and when you are out and about.  These are areas we all know are important but due to our fast paced lives, many of us become complacent about personal safety.  It is nice to be reminded of these basic but very important strategies.

We also covered in detail The 10 Principles of Basic Physical Defense:

1.   Increase Reaction Time
2.   Obtain Good Balance
3.   Develop A Plan of Action
4.   Use Distraction Techniques
5.   Identify His Vulnerable Locations
6.   Use Your Personal Weapons
7.   Avoid Confronting With Force
8.   Avoid Panic
9.   Disengage and Run
10.  PRACTICE!!

In the next class (3-11-08), we will get into the actual self-defense techniques.  This will be the real meat of the program.  Looking forward to this class!!
