Each day as we leave the safety and comfort of our home, we need to have a plan of how we will defend ourselves should we become a victim of a violent attack by a crazy perpetrator.

Your main goal in this situation should always be to escape to safety.  However, you must realize that you may have to fight your way to safety.  Should it come down to your life – are you going to accept the consequences of the attack or are you going to fight for your life?  If you decide to fight, be sure to fight with everything you have!

That’s why women need to be mentally prepared with a plan on what to do if attacked.  It is not a pleasant thing to think about, but the alternatives are not good either.  Especially if you listen to the daily news about the violence against women.  Everyday we hear about abductions, rapes, attacks, and murders.   Many times an attacker will actually walk away from a victim who puts up a strong fight. They are looking for a weak victim, not a confident, empowered woman who is going to fight back.

To become mentally prepared – invest some time and effort into taking some kind of personal security awareness class, a self-defense class, or purchase books and/or DVD’s on self-defense.  Knowing some self-defense techniques can throw off or deter an attacker giving you time to quickly escape to safety.  These self-defense techniques could save your life!

No matter how strong a person is there are areas of the body that are vulnerable to self-defense techniques.   These are going to be standard targets you will want to focus your strikes if attacked.  To protect yourself, there are some simple, easy to remember things you can do that don’t require a great deal of training.

Think about the human body.  If you draw a line down the center of the body, you have the eyes, the nose, the throat, and the groin area.  If you hit someone in the throat, poke them in the eyes or hit them with the palm of your hand on the bridge of the nose, strike them in the groin, kick them in the front or side of the knee – these actions can all hurt and distract the perpetrator no matter what their size.  The question for you is how hard you strike to inflict the maximum level of pain, enough for you to escape.  A great majority of women don’t want to hurt others and actually avoid inflicting too much pain in these areas.  The attacker doesn’t care what happens to you – REMEMBER THAT!  So your only goal is to inflict enough pain on that person to discourage their attack.

Remember these areas of the body AND if you are attacked fight back with all the energy you have:

1.  The eyes.  No matter how strong a person is, a good blow or poke to the eyes will take any fighter out.  Remember that most fighters, even well-trained ones, rely on their eyes to attack.
2.  The throat.  With a little skill hitting someone in either the Adam’s apple region or the space between the rib cage and the throat, it will probably knock the wind out of them.
3.  Bridge of the nose.  The nose is a delicate membrane.  Hitting the nose hard enough to make it bleed will also cause the eyes to tear and blur vision.  Hold out your hand and spread your fingers wide.  This tightens the hand and pushes forward the palm side of the large knuckles.  Feel how hard they are.  Use this part to strike at the area right below where the nose joins the brow ridge, the center of the nose.  At the very least, a strike to the nose will stun your attacker.  If hit hard enough then followed by another strike to either the eyes or ears, it can cause what is known as “whiplash” and take the attacker down.
4.  Groin area.  This is a favorite for many.  When done properly, it is a knockout punch.  There are three ways to get the groin area - the knees, feet, or hands.  Which to use depends on how your body is situated in relation to your attacker.

• Knees.  If using a knee, bring it upward as hard as you can with the end of your knee as the strike point.  Drive it into the groin.  If your hands are free, before striking, grab the attacker’s hips and pull the attacker into the strike as you drive the knee.

• Feet.  Bring your instep up into your attacker’s groin.  However, if you are too close for that, but too far to use a knee, kicking straight up and striking with the shinbone of your leg works just fine also.

• Hands.  Swing your arm in a straight-arm upward strike into the groin, either using an open-hand palm strike or a closed fist – the closed fist strikes just the same as the open palm strike, except the fingers are curled – still a straight-arm strike.

Being mentally prepared and knowing how to defend yourself in this awful situation is key.  If verbal methods don’t work and you have to fight for your life – fight to inflict enough pain on your attacker to throw him off while you escape to safety and call for help.

Remember, Stay Aware…Stay Alert…Stay Alive!  And be mentally prepared.
